They Were Asking For It

GoAlybongo's emotional video high lights how both men and women
can blame women who receive abuse. Rape culture as its grown to be known
is the idea that for some reason the victims of rape are at fault usually because
of what they are wearing or where they are and what they are doing.

in reality the only reason rape happens is because of rapists.
Men and children can also be raped, are we to assume they were also asking for it?

Society continues to teach women not to be raped when they should teach:
 Don't Rape

  1. I spend a lot of time on Tumblr where rape culture is a common topic that is talked about. The things that some girls confess they have been through are horrific; however, the responses are possibly even worse. From "You're lucky someone risked going to jail just to have sex with you." to "He was looking for the drunkest girl at the party. It just happened to be you." to "You really shouldn't lie about these things. It will ruin his reputation." The overwhelming response that I have heard to sexual assault and rape victims is that it is somehow their fault and they should have prevented it. It makes me sick because no one ever deserves it.

  2. I recall being in health class in high school, when the issue of rape was discussed when studying the required drug/alcohol unit. Which of course, was brief. I recall my teacher touching on this subject, quickly mentioning ways in which the girls specifically might avoid situations that might lead to rape. Never once did she look at the class, collectively, and say, "intoxication is not an invitation to have sex with another individual." It is incredible how, even on a linguistic level, sexual assault is inherently recognized on a social level as "women's problem," rather than attempting to address and correct the overall mindset that plagues our current culture, that rape might be in any way justifiable. Ah, I hope I live to see a day when rape will be as socially unthinkable as cannibalism.
